Cults, Biblically Identified

What is a Cult?

The times in which we live are full of people trying to expose error without firmly establishing the truth. Religious leaders and groups are continually pointing fingers at each other, decrying wrong teaching and practice, and yet unable to point out and proclaim the truth.

Invariably, the word "cult" is used to arouse fear in the hearts and minds of those being warned, for no one wants to be part of a cult. The examples of Jim Jones, David Koresh, and others with whom the term cult is associated, has made it a convenient "catch-all" word for those who would stand against a true move of God.

We wish here to insert the definition of the word "cult", in order to have a proper understanding of the accusation being made. The root word for "cult" is the same Latin word form which "cultivation" is derived, and the definitions are as follows:

1. A system of religious worship or ritual
2. a) devoted attachment to, or extravagant admiration for a person, principle, etc., especially when regarded as a fad b) the object of such attachment
3. A group of followers; sect

It is our desire to examine, in the light of God's Word, some of the things considered to be "marks" of a "cult". May God grant understanding to all who will read this, that they may be able to discern between truth and error.
