Satan’s Recycling Bin

There is a prevailing notion, especially in the western world today, that mankind has outgrown the Bible. The idea is that scientific discoveries and man’s intellect have progressed to such an extent that we are no longer in need of faith in God to explain our existence, the Bible to dictate our morals, nor the promise of an afterlife to dissipate man’s fear of death.

Of course, if we accept Darwin’s theory of evolution it would naturally follow that man would perpetually advance until our primitive ideas became obsolete. It then becomes easy to believe that the discoveries and intellectual conclusions of men like Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, George Lemaitre and Stephen Hawking have advanced mankind to the point that it is outdated to believe the universe was created by God in six literal days.

The most popular belief on the origin of the universe today is the Big Bang theory. According to this theory, the universe began 13.8 billion years ago as an infinitely small, dense and hot “something” that scientists call a singularity. For reasons unknown, the universe contained in this singularity suddenly expanded faster than the speed of light. Within a trillionth of a trillionth of a second, the universe went from its subatomic size to the size of a golf ball. It then kept on expanding, and as it did so, the universe cooled and matter formed. Although the protons, neutrons and electrons that form atoms appeared only minutes after the big bang, these particles did not form into atoms until thousands of years afterwards. As billions of years passed, more and more elements appeared and 9 billion years later our solar system was formed!

The Big Bang theory is presented with sophisticated terminology and recent scientific discoveries, such as singularities, cosmic microwave background radiation, and the Hubble law, which impress us with the idea that the theory is highly scientific and advanced. But in reality, the Big Bang theory is only a modernized version of a long-standing denial of God’s creation as proclaimed in the biblical account in Genesis.

Two millennia ago, the apostle Paul met with Epicurean philosophers in Athens. The Epicureans were founded by the philosopher Epicurus, who was born in 341 BC. The Ancient Mediterranean World by Robin W. Winks and Susan P. Mattern-Parkes states, “The Epicureans adopted the atomic theory of physics and believed that the universe was the result of a chance amalgamation of atoms rather than the work of a providential god.” Lucretius (99-55 BC), the best known Roman Epicurean, further believed that nature progresses through the eons, and the organisms that best adapt to their environment are the ones that survive. That theory is exactly what Charles Darwin proposed in his book On the Origin of Species in 1859. And it is the same theory taught in the public schools’ textbooks in the twenty first century.

Regardless of the contemporary scientific terminology that attempts to persuade us that the theories of the Big Bang and evolution are highly advanced truths that have finally been discovered by modern science, the fact is that those theories have existed for about as long as man has attempted to deny his Creator.

And to this day they remain just that–theories. Many might feel that the struggle between the Genesis account of the creation and the scientific philosophers is a relatively modern issue. But, in reality, the apostles had to contend with the same dragon in their time.

Paul’s message on Mars Hill is a masterpiece blow to the pagans, the Epicureans and the Stoics alike. To the Epicureans he declared, “God…made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of heaven and earth.” To the Stoics, who denied a personal God and the afterlife, Paul proclaimed, “That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after Him, though He be not far from every one of us: for in Him we live, and move, and have our being…because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man who He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.” And to the pagans Paul boldly asserted, “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.”

Such preaching by the apostles was what bound up the draconic influences in their time! But in our time, the dragon has been released for a short time as it was prophesied in Revelation 20:7-8. Is it any wonder then that the ancient philosophies of the Epicureans have been revived in our time as well? But never fear, for the Lord has also restored to us bold apostles that will unflinchingly conquer that old dragon once and for all! The unadulterated gospel is going forth, the devil’s devices are being exposed, and the Alleluias in mount Zion are gaining momentum as the nations flow in!

Meanwhile, those that choose to remain in unbelief will continue to grapple with the Genesis account of the creation. They will continue to philosophize about the origin of the universe and come up with modern ways to discredit God’s existence. But in the end, the truth remains that all such philosophies and theories are only ancient notions that are being salvaged from Satan’s old recycling bin.
